Safety on Spark

Verification, and how to date confidently.

Spark is built so you know who you're talking to. Here is exactly what our verified badge means, how we catch fake accounts, and what to do if anything ever feels off.

How photo verification works

A live photo, in a pose we choose

The member is asked for a fresh selfie copying a pose picked at random, so a saved or borrowed photo cannot pass.

A person compares it to their profile

A Spark moderator checks the selfie against the profile photos before the badge is granted.

Duplicate photos are caught too

Every upload is checked against existing profiles, so the same person cannot run two accounts with the same pictures.

Verification is free for every member, and verified members also pay $10/month instead of $15 as a thank you for keeping Spark authentic. Verified profiles are also given a gentle boost in Discover, so they are seen earlier. You can also switch Discover to verified members only with the toggle above the deck. Your verification selfie is stored privately: only the reviewing moderator ever sees it, and it is never shown on your profile.

What the badge means, and what it doesn't

A verified badge means the person in the photos is the person running the account. It is not a background check, and it says nothing about someone's intentions. Use it as a starting point for trust, not a replacement for your instincts. Everywhere you see someone — your matches, your chats, groups, and the Lounge — a blue badge marks the members who proved their photos are really them. Tap any badge to see exactly what was checked.

Meeting someone new

Meet somewhere public

First dates belong in a café, bar, or park — never a private home or a car. Take your own transport there and back.

Tell someone where you are going

Share the plan, the place, and the time with a friend or family member, and check in when you get home.

Video chat before you meet

A quick call confirms the person on the screen is the person in the photos, and takes the pressure off the first date.

Scams and red flags

  • Asks for money, gift cards, crypto, or your banking details — real matches never do.
  • Pushes you to move the conversation to another app almost immediately.
  • Refuses to video chat, or makes excuses every time you suggest it.
  • Claims to be stuck somewhere and needs your help to get home.
  • Love-bombs you within days: intense feelings, pet names, and pressure to commit.

If anyone asks you for money or financial details, report and block them immediately.

If something goes wrong

Report a profile or message

Open the profile or press and hold a message, then choose Report. Reports go straight to a moderator — the person is never told.

Block and unmatch

Blocking removes the match, the messages, and any chance of contact from that account. You can do it in one tap from a chat.

Control your own data

You can pause your profile, hide it from Discover, and request an export or deletion of your data whenever you like.

In an emergency, contact your local emergency services first. Spark moderators review every report and can warn, suspend, or permanently ban an account.
